This month I am being reminded of how much the weather (mostly the abundance or lack of sunshine) affects my mood and motivation. This January/February has been SO cloudy and dismal - my mood and motivation reflecting that by being low with a lack of energy.
The benefit of living in a cold, northern climate with snow is usually bright sunny days that can still energize you.
This year, we have experienced the opposite in an area of Canada known for it’s high count of sunny days per year. Both Edmonton and Winnipeg have brutally cold days but so much sun. Except this year 😭.
It has been cloudy 🌨️ and warm (not complaining about the temperatures really) with bouts of slushy snow that makes your feet wet. But I long for crisp, clear days 🥶 where the temperature outside almost hurts your face but the sun warms it back up and energizes us. Days like the one pictured below.
All this grey is giving me the February Blahs!
So let’s talk about how to combat those blahs, no matter what month you are in.
What are your strategies for combating grey, cloudy days with little sun?
Let me how you deal with dark, cloudy days in the comments or by answering the poll below.
Kara’s Tips for Combatting Grey Weather
Here’s what I do to get the most out of winter and improve my mood and energy!
Get Outside Everyday - I don’t always get out for long periods of time. Sometimes it’s just around the block. I just know I need fresh air and the sun on my face. Natural light in my eyes is good for your physical, mental and emotional health
Supplement Vitamin D - note: I am not a physician and am not giving health advice - but most people who live in the northern hemisphere are Vitamin D deficient - so taking a supplement form of Vitamin D (liquid or pill) will help your immune system and mood during winter months
Drink Enough Water - Did you know it’s easier to dehydrate in the winter than the summer because we don’t feel thirsty and forget to drink enough? You should be drinking half your body weight (200 pounds = 100 oz water) each day. That much water is hard to get in when we have not developed the habit but work up slowly and celebrate your wins. Your body will thank you by working better for you.
Hang Out With People - yes, even us introverts - know your limits but make sure you are getting out to socialize and connect with your people. It can be a lonely season but we were made to be in community and to connect with others, so schedule it in and stick to those commitments even if it’s short visits.
I will leave you with this reminder that it won’t always be so dark and cloudy!
